Places to Visit and Highlights of Surya Top Trek

The Surya Top Trek is one of Uttarakhand's most rewarding high-altitude hikes, offering panoramic Himalayan views, dense forests, beautiful alpine meadows, and peaceful campsites. Starting from the charming village of Barsu, the trail gradually climbs through oak and rhododendron forests before opening into vast Bugyals and finally reaching the breathtaking summit of Surya Top. Along the way, trekkers witness some of the finest landscapes in the Garhwal Himalayas.

Dayara Bugyal

One of the biggest highlights of the Surya Top Trek is the spectacular Dayara Bugyal, one of the largest alpine meadows in India. Spread across rolling green hills at an altitude of around 3,400 meters, the meadow transforms with every season.

During spring and summer, colorful wildflowers bloom across the grasslands, while autumn paints the meadows golden. In winter, thick snow blankets the entire landscape, turning it into a paradise for snow trekkers and photographers.

From Dayara Bugyal, trekkers enjoy uninterrupted views of towering Himalayan peaks including Bandarpoonch, Black Peak (Kala Nag), Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda, Jaonli, and many others.

Beautiful View From Surya Top

Surya Top Summit

The Surya Top Summit, standing at approximately 12,900 ft, is undoubtedly the highlight of the trek. After a gradual climb across alpine meadows and ridgelines, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Garhwal Himalayas. The vast open summit provides enough space to relax, enjoy the scenery, and capture unforgettable photographs before descending.

Siyari Campsite

Siyari is another beautiful campsite on the Surya Top trail, surrounded by rolling meadows and forests. The peaceful environment, cool mountain breeze, and open landscapes make it an excellent place to unwind after a day of trekking.

Trekkers often spend time watching grazing horses and sheep while enjoying uninterrupted views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges.

Dense Oak and Rhododendron Forests

Before reaching the alpine meadows, the trail passes through enchanting forests filled with oak, maple, deodar, and rhododendron trees. During spring, blooming rhododendrons add vibrant shades of red and pink to the landscape, making the forest section especially beautiful.

These forests are home to several Himalayan birds, butterflies, and wildlife, offering plenty of opportunities for nature lovers and photographers.

Himalayan Sunrise and Sunset Views

One of the most memorable experiences on the Surya Top Trek is witnessing the sunrise and sunset over the snow-covered Himalayan peaks.

As the first rays of sunlight touch the mountains, peaks like Bandarpoonch and Black Peak glow in brilliant shades of orange and gold. In the evening, the changing colors of the sky create equally stunning views, making every campsite a perfect location for photography.

Flora and Fauna of Surya Top Trek

Flora

The magical forests here are dominated by Oak, Rhododendron, and Deodar (Himalayan Cedar) which translates to "Wood of the Gods" in Sanskrit. Beyond 3000m Himalayan Birch or Bhojpatra trees appear historically used for recording manuscripts. Rare flowers like the Blue Poppy (Hemkamal) and Brahmakamal the state flower of Uttarakhand can be found. The Brahmakamal blooms only at night once a year in late summer or early autumn and holds cultural significance often offered to Someshwar Devta for prosperity.

Fauna

The region is home to a variety of wildlife including Himalayan monals, snow partridges, and various other birds. Trekkers may spot Himalayan foxes, musk deer, and occasionally, bharals (blue sheep), Himalayan langurs, Griffon vultures, and, with some luck, even a snow leopard. Birdwatchers can enjoy sightings of Monal (Uttarakhand’s state bird), Long-tail Minivet, and Yellow-billed Chough. Butterflies thrive in abundance adding splashes of color to the landscape. Notable species include:

The trek remains closed during the monsoon season (July to August) due to heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and the risk of landslides. Although winter (December to February) transforms Surya Top into a stunning snow trek, it is best suited for experienced trekkers because of deep snow and freezing temperatures.

Surya Top Trek in Spring (March – April)

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to experience the Surya Top Trek. As winter fades away, the forests come alive with fresh greenery and blooming rhododendrons, creating vibrant shades of red and pink along the trail.

The trek begins from Barsu Village, passing through dense forests of oak, maple, and rhododendron before opening into the magnificent Dayara Bugyal. During March, patches of snow may still be found on higher sections near Surya Top, adding a beautiful contrast to the lush green meadows below.

The weather remains pleasant during the day, while mornings and nights can still be quite cold. The snow-covered peaks of Bandarpoonch, Black Peak (Kala Nag), Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda, and the Gangotri range remain clearly visible, making spring one of the best seasons for photography.

Summer is also an ideal time for families, first-time trekkers, and photographers who want to experience the beauty of Uttarakhand's alpine meadows under clear blue skies.

Surya Top Trek in Autumn (September – November)

Autumn brings some of the clearest mountain views of the entire year, making it another excellent season for the Surya Top Trek.

After the monsoon, the forests appear fresh and vibrant, while the meadows remain lush and green during September. As October arrives, the landscape gradually changes into beautiful golden and earthy shades, creating spectacular scenery throughout the trek.

The post-monsoon air is exceptionally clear, allowing uninterrupted views of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks. Sunrise and sunset from Surya Top Summit become even more magical as the golden light reflects off the surrounding mountains.

The weather remains cool and comfortable during the day, although mornings and nights become colder as winter approaches. By late November, temperatures begin to drop significantly, and the first snowfall may arrive on the higher reaches of the trek.

Why choose Himalaya Shelter For Your Surya Top Trek?

Mountain-centric & Local Roots

Started by a trekker born in the Himalayas (Bachan Rana), most of their team are locals. That means real terrain knowledge and instincts on the trail.
We operate in regions like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir & Ladakh — strong ground support matters at altitude.

Safety Above All

  • Certified trek leaders trained in CPR & first aid
  • Zero fatality record for over a decade
  •  Daily health checks and acclimatisation focus
  •  Oxygen support if needed

These aren’t just promises — these are real safety systems, not just marketing words.

Small & Personal Groups

Most big companies run 20–30+ people. Himalaya Shelter usually keeps groups small (8–12) — so guides can care about you, not just the batch.

Small groups = better experience | More attention | Better bonding | Less chaos | Faster response if something goes sideways

Flexible & Fair Policies

If bad weather or health stops you from finishing, we let you rejoin the same trek later without extra fees — that’s rare.

Food & Comfort That People Talk About

Many trekkers specifically praise the meals, tents, and service — not something every operator manages well at high altitude.

Customised Treks

We tailor your trek based on your:

  • Fitness level
  • Group type
  • Preferred pace or dates
  • Select your cuisine

Real customisation is not standard everywhere.

Responsible & Eco-Friendly Trekking
We follow responsible trekking practices to minimise environmental impact and respect local communities. Supporting local staff and village economies is a core part of our philosophy.

In short, Himalaya Shelter feels less like a company and more like a mountain family — deeply rooted in the Himalayas and committed to making your trek safe, personal, and memorable.
