The Nubra Valley trek is situated in the northern part of Ladakh. Lies between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges of the Himalayas. this trek is famous for its old ancient silk route stretching from India to Central Asia, the ancient trade route connecting the Indus and Nubra valleys. Walking through beautiful lush meadows, passing through Lasermo La, beautiful valley of Hunder Dok, and explore Sumar Monastery, Disket Monastery and Hunder Monastery.
Nubra Valley Trek is a journey to the wonders of nature. The beauty of Nubra Valley in Ladakh can’t be explained in words. It is also known as the “Valley Of Flowers” of Ladakh. The valley is separated by the Khardunga Pass. This is one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The trek to Nubra Valley is something that you can’t experience in any other treks. As everyone knows, Ladakh offers a different landscape that you won’t find anywhere else in India. Your Nubra Valley Trek can be an odyssey to paradise.
Somewhere you will see sand dunes whereas some landscapes offer big snow-capped mountains. There are also lush green villages nowhere between the cold deserts. The locals are very friendly and kind hearted.

Nubra Valley is deep rooted with ancient trade routes. The valley was also a passage for culture exchange. It was the part of the silk route that connected India to Central Asian parts. Many big-small traders used to travel via Nubra Valley to Tibet and China. This valley was a crucial route for exchanging goods like silk, wool, spices, salt, etc. This valley was once known as “Ldumra” that means “Valley Of Flowers”. It is one of the places where you can see fertile land in between cold deserts. Many monks also traveled through the valley to spread Buddhism. This part of Ladakh is very influenced by Tibetan culture. The valley was mostly unknown to other parts of the country till early 20th century due to limited road accessibility. Today, the roads are better and Nubra Valley witnesses lots of tourists every summer.
The landscapes of Nubra valley is something you won’t find in any other treks of India. Somewhere you will see big barren brown mountains. There are also rivers with crystal-clear waters. You can see sand dunes and snow-capped mountains together. Somewhere it's barren and somewhere is fully green.
If you are in Hunder, look for Bactrian Camel Safari. Finding a camel in the mountain region is a puzzle itself. You can do the camel safari in the sand dunes. This is probably a one of a kind thing you can do in this trek.
Nubra valley is known as “Valley Of Flowers” of Ladakh. True to its name, you can see blooms in the summer season. In summer, some parts of Nubra Valley turn green with varieties of flowers and fruits. The apricot blossom attracts lots of tourists.
The trails of Nubra Valley Trek are considered easy. Most treks in Ladakh region are difficult due to difficult terrain. But Nubra valley is more like a beginner-friendly trek. The ascends are extremely smooth and it does not have any technical parts. Different terrains such as rocky mountains and green grassland and rivers are present. But these are moderately challenging.
The altitude of Nubra Valley is 5350m. This is fairly high as a himalayan trek. People usually get AMS over 4000m. The valley is situated at a very good height and acclimatization is very necessary. Else, you can get symptoms like nausea and headache. All trekkers must acclimate at Leh before the trek.
Spring is the early season for trekking to Nubra Valley. The snow starts melting and you can see warmer daytime. The fertile patches also start turning green. You can also enjoy the apricot blossom. There will be less crowd and the trek will be more peaceful.
The Nubra Valley Trek is likely to be the best during summer. The season is the warmest time of Ladakh. It will have increased greenery and the roads are easier. You can explore the whole valley and have some of your best time.
Autumn is also beautiful in Nubra Valley. The greenery of the valley starts turning golden. The golden and orange hues of the valley really feel picture-perfect. The temperature starts falling and nights can be really chilly. This is the last season for Nubra Valley Trek as winters are very difficult in Ladakh.
Ladakh receives a high amount of snowfall which makes trekking very difficult. You can’t reach Ladakh via road as the roads get buried somewhere in the snow. Winter Ladakh is beautiful yet challenging. You can only trek to only some parts of Nubra Valley in winters.
Delhi To Leh: Take a direct flight to Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport. By road, it may take 2-3 days to reach Leh from Delhi. You can take either the Manali-Leh route or Srinagar-Leh route. But these routes remain closed in winters.
Leh To Nubra Valley: The distance of Nubra Valley from Leh is 120km which can take about 6 hours. You will drive through Kardung La Pass - Khardung Village - Hunder - Nubra Valley.
Ladakh and blossom feels like poles apart. But you can actually have a wonderful apricot blossom in late spring or early summer. Some parts of the valley get covered with apricot blossoms and the landscape looks perfect.
If you love historical monuments and murals then you will surely enjoy this trek. There are centuries old monasteries like Diskit Gompta, Samstanling, etc. You can see beautiful murals, prayer wheels and various other things. Some monasteries are also serving as Buddhist schools.
Nubra Valley has minimal villages. You are able to visit the villages and get to know more of their culture. Quite a number of these houses are acting as homestays. They are extremely comfortable and they offer the essential facilities. Camel safari in Hunder is also possible. Savor the Ladakhi food and hospitality of the people.
Nubra Valley Trek is about a week long. You will need a backpack(50-60L) that can hold all your items. Buy a backpack that can provide you good back support. Take 5 comfortable t-shirts and 3 pairs of trekking pants. One should also always carry thermals for night. Get a nice windcheater which will help you to keep off the cold winds. Get a suncap and a woolen cap. If you are hiking to Nubra Valley during spring or autumn, bring a padded jacket and a pair of gloves. Now put on a pair of trekking shoes. Get 5 pairs of trekking shocks and 2 pairs of woolen socks. A pair of sandals can also be packed to the camping site. And now you are going to pack your own stuff, such as tooth-brushes and other toiletry. You are also supposed to be carrying some basic medicines.
The mean altitude of Nubra Valley is approximately 5300m. Such height can very easily cause AMS. It is advisable to acclimatize yourself always before going on your trek. At least one day to get used to Leh. Eat well and take no alcohol/smoking. Get a good sleep and get ready for the expedition.
The weather conditions can change anytime in Ladakh. The temperature can drop immediately even in peak summer. You need to carry warm clothes like 3-4 layers even in summer. The winds can be very chilly so always pack a good windcheater with you. Pack all the essentials for the Nubra Valley Trek.
The Nubra Valley is an actual gift of nature. It is extremely beautiful and the larger part of the valley has not been exploited. You must be respectful to the environment in case you are hiking to Nubra Valley. Do not harm any plant or animal. Dress properly while visiting the monasteries and always ask permission before photographing people.
Day 1: Arrive in Leh and Acclimatize
On the first day you will arrive at Leh. Nubra Valley is located at a very high altitude hence we will spend the day in acclimatization. You may have a good rest and enjoy the Leh city.
Day 2: Drive to Hunder and trek to Hunder Dok
We have begun this journey to Hunder to-day. Leh is approximately 125km away from Hunder. It will take about 4-5 hours. We shall commence now journeying to Hunder Dok. The distance is about 15 km.
Day 3: Trek from Hunder Dok to Sumdo Dok
We will begin trekking after taking a warm breakfast at Hunder Dok to Sumdo Dok. It will take approximately 5 hours and cover 8km. You will walk beside the Thanglasgo river.
Day 4: Trek from Sumdo Dok toThanglasgo valley
After breakfast we shall begin trekking to Thanglasgo valley. We will travel approximately 10km in the course of the day, and this will take us approximately 5 hours. In the trek you will see great open pastures and shepherd villages.
Day 5: Trek from Thanglasgo to Lasermo La Base
We shall now begin a walk to Lasermo La Base. It will take around 4-5 hours. You will see high altitude pastures and small lakes. You can also see Yaks on the road.
Day 6: Trek from Lasermo La to Phyang Phu
It will be a little difficult trek today because we will pass on rocky grounds and moraine. Summer High altitude meadows in summer will be full of wildflowers. Zanskar and Karakoram ranges that are beautiful will also be seen.
Day 7: Trek from Phyang Phu to Morobuk and drive back to Leh
We are commencing to-day trekking to Morobuk. It is a slow downward decline that is classified as easy to moderate. On arrival in Morobuk we will drive back to Leh.
